Is It Normal to Crack, Pop, or Grind When You Move?

Many people notice popping, cracking, clicking, or grinding sounds when they move. Maybe your neck cracks when turning, your knee pops on stairs, or your shoulder clicks during workouts. These sounds can be harmless—but sometimes they’re a sign that movement patterns need attention.
Not every joint noise means damage. Often, popping is caused by gas bubbles releasing in the joint, tendons shifting over structures, or minor pressure changes during motion. This is common and may not cause concern if there is no pain or limitation.
However, sounds that happen repeatedly with stiffness, pain, catching, weakness, or loss of motion deserve a closer look.
Joint noise can be associated with:
Restricted movement
Poor mechanics
Muscle imbalance
Overuse patterns
Tissue irritation
Degeneration
Previous injury compensation
For example, a neck that constantly cracks may be stiff between movements. A shoulder that clicks may not be stabilizing properly. A knee that grinds may be dealing with tracking issues or mobility restrictions above or below the joint.
At 614 Chiropractic, we assess how the entire body moves—not just where the sound occurs. Often the area making noise is compensating for dysfunction elsewhere.
Chiropractic care may help improve joint mobility, reduce abnormal stress, and restore better movement patterns. When tissue damage or chronic inflammation is involved, SoftWave therapy may also be considered to support healing and circulation.
The goal is not simply to “silence” a joint. It’s to improve how it functions.
If cracking or grinding is paired with pain, repeated stiffness, or reduced performance, don’t ignore it. Early evaluation can often prevent bigger issues later.
